Objectives: “Heartbeat” bans strive to end abortion access at detection of possible cardiac
activity and are increasingly introduced in Southern legislatures. This study uses
legislative debate as narrative data to elucidate and compare the arguments, strategies,
and evidence employed on both sides of “heartbeat” bills in the southern US.
